A Vermont Gray-Black Roof, Without the Structural Argument

There is a conversation that ends a lot of slate roof projects, and it usually happens early. Someone wants slate. Someone else runs the numbers on what the existing structure can carry. The answer comes back, and the project becomes a conversation about synthetic alternatives instead.


That conversation is about weight, and it is worth understanding before you accept its conclusion.



What a slate roof actually weighs

Roofing is measured in squares. One square is 100 square feet of roof area. Traditional full-weight natural slate typically runs from roughly 800 to 1,000 lbs per square depending on thickness and quarry. Our Vermont Gray, a full-weight Vermont slate, is 960 lbs per square.

Spread that across a whole roof and it is a real structural load. New construction can be designed for it without much difficulty. Existing framing frequently cannot absorb it without reinforcement, and reinforcement means an engineer, a set of drawings, a permit revision and a cost that often exceeds the price difference between slate and whatever gets specified instead.

This is why so many historic buildings that should have slate roofs do not have slate roofs.


Where the weight actually comes from

It is worth being precise. The weight is not really about the stone being heavy. It is about how much of it you are carrying. Traditional slate roofing is thick, and it is installed in overlapping courses, which means much of the material on the roof is covered by other material on the roof. You are carrying two to three layers of stone across most of the surface.

Reduce the thickness and rethink the assembly, and the load drops sharply without giving up the stone.


Introducing Vermont Gray-Black

Vermont Gray-Black is a new addition to our line, and it is the first gray-black we offer exclusively in the SLATE2 lightweight system.

It installs at 550 lbs per square. That is 5.5 lbs per square foot, and roughly 43% below the comparable full-weight Vermont slate in our own catalog.

It is not a substitute material. It is not a composite, a polymer, or a stone-look product. It is quarried Vermont slate, ASTM C406 S1 grade, 1/4" to 3/8" thick, installed with the patented SLATE2 interlayment system that carries the weather barrier.

In most applications, that weight removes the structural reinforcement requirement entirely. The conversation that used to end the project does not happen.


What it looks like

Medium to dark gray with subtle black linear markings. Uniform across the roof. This is the classic slate roof most people picture, not a variegated or multi-color blend. It sits equally well on a contemporary residence, a commercial elevation and a historic restoration.

One thing we will say plainly, because most suppliers will not: about 4-6% of these slates will show slight signs of weathering after 12 to 18 months of exposure. Some lighter areas may develop subtle bronzing.

That is not a defect and it is not a surprise. It is what natural stone does, and knowing the number in advance is the difference between character and a complaint. The roof stays a uniform gray-black roof.


How long it lasts

The slate itself has a material service life of 100 to 200 years. There are slate roofs in service today that were installed before the automobile. The SLATE2 system carries a 50-year warranty covering the interlayment assembly that sits beneath the stone.

Two numbers, two different things, and worth separating. The stone outlives the warranty by a wide margin, and the warranty covers the system that installs it.

  • Fire: achieves Class A with appropriate interlayment (ASTM E-108)

  • Hail: Class 3 (FM 4473)

  • Wind and rain: exceeds 110 MPH (TAS 100 A, Dade County Protocol)

  • Grade: meets ASTM C406 (S1 Grade); modulus of rupture tested per ASTM C120

Who this is for

  • Re-roofs over existing framing, where the structure is fixed and reinforcement is not in the budget.

  • Historic and adaptive reuse projects, where the appearance has to be right and the structure cannot be altered.

  • Homeowners who have been told their house cannot take slate. That advice was given about full-weight slate and may no longer apply.

  • Architects specifying on constrained structures, where slate has historically been value-engineered out on load grounds alone.

  • Contractors bidding re-roofs, where removing the reinforcement line item makes the bid easier to sell and faster to close.

One last thing on color
